The Ram Fortress, a picturesque medieval fortress, was built in 1483 by the order of Sultan Bayezid II, the grandfather of Suleiman the Magnificent.
According to legend, Bayezid II, while visiting his soldiers, stopped at a hill with a beautiful view of the Danube and the opposite Hungarian side. Feeling rejuvenated after resting on a carpet (ihram), the sultan ordered the construction of a fortress at that location, which was named after the ihram.
The Ram Fortress has five towers connected by powerful walls. This is the first typical artillery fortress in Serbia, with 36 cannon openings covering the entire circle around the fortress. Its great power is comparable to the Belgrade fortress of Kalemegdan, which has only 22 cannon openings.
Due to its strategic position and architectural beauty, the Ram Fortress attracts a large number of tourists. Visitors emphasize that there is no better place to understand medieval battles than standing on the battlefield itself.
One of the legends about the Ram Fortress says that Romulus’s younger brother Rem, after quarreling with his brother, set out with his wife Leticia in search of the most romantic place in the world. They found a high cliff overlooking the calm and mighty Danube river.
Captivated by the sight, they decided to make their home there. The settlement was named Ram after Rem, and the sunsets at this place were declared one of the most beautiful in Europe by “National Geographic.”
The Ram Fortress is surrounded by romantic paths covered with lush vegetation and wildflowers. From its picturesque viewpoints, you can see the most beautiful European river, the Danube.
Throughout history, the place has been home to many civilizations: Celts, Romans, Slavs, Ottomans, and Austro-Hungarians. On Turkish, Hungarian, and Austrian maps from the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries, this place was marked as a “Hram,” which is a Celtic word for sanctuary. At the end of the fourth century BC, the Celts crossed the Danube at this place and formed a fortified settlement – opidum, of which the earth walls and fortified gate remain.
According to some sources, the Ram Fortress was the residence of the Hun leader Attila, known as the Scourge of God. On the right bank of the Danube, on a steep rocky cliff, are the walls of the medieval town of Ram. Today it is a small village, but once it was known as a town, formed around the fortress of the same name.
